Poem + Recipe – Burmese Curry Chicken Udon

Today was yet another nice spring day, so I started craving Curry and Watermelon. I think that’s a craving that’s a bit too uniquely me!

Anyway, my Burmese friend taught me the recipe for Ohn No Khauk Swe, a traditional Burmese breakfast dish. It’s a nice, lemony dish with mouth-watering Coconut and Turmeric combination that will be sure to awe you.

So, I went on the escapade to make this dish. Only thing different is I substituted the thin noodles for Udon 😂😂

This is one of the few recipes where I just wing it based on taste, so please adjust all the seasoning according to your preference. The dish is quite forgiving if you under-season it, because you can always add it as a garnish in the end 😊

Recipe for One

  • 1 packet of microwaveable Udon
  • 150 grams – Chicken breast or thighs cut into bite sized pieces (or more, if you want more protein)
  • 80 grams – Minced Onion
  • 15 grams – Grated Garlic
  • 10 grams – Grated Ginger
  • 5 mL – Oil
  • 8 grams – Turmeric
  • 5 grams – Chilli Powder or Paprika
  • 10 mL – Fish sauce (or more to taste)
  • 80 mL – Coconut Milk
  • 5 grams – All purpose flour or gram flour (you can get this in Asian Markets)
  • 1 Lemon (mellow)/Lime(sharp). Cut it into half, and juice one of the halves. Cut the other half into a quarter for garnish
  • Water, if needed

Optional Garnish

  • Thinly sliced shallots
  • Chilli pepper flakes
  • Fried onion
  • Lime/Lemon
  • Cilantro
  • Boiled Egg


  1. Marinate the chicken with the ginger, garlic, turmeric and chili powder for at least 10 minutes
  2. Heat oil in a pot and saute the onions until golden brown
  3. Add the marinaded chicken and lemon juice and stir fry for 2 minutes
  4. Now, add the fish sauce and the coconut milk
  5. Let the mixture come to a boil
  6. Add the liquid from the curry to the flour, mix well, and add it back to the pot
  7. Let the mixture thicken and turn off the heat (add more water here, if it is too thick for you)
  8. Microwave the Udon as per the instructions on the packet
  9. Place the Udon in a bowl, and pour the chicken curry all over it.
  10. Garnish, and serve!
